The Grossmans invited us to Bethel Grove, where old and young alike delight to country waltz and contra dancing. It's deeply satisfying to see a community come together to celebrate at the end of the work week. We surfed their enthusiasm as the orchestra welcomed Brendan, and the dance floor welcomed the rest of us, for awhile. It was the kind of warmup that we find necessary to loosen and refocus on what was to be the main event of the evening: Liverpool Rummy with Kristine Averill and Jennifer Gardner.
Kristine leaves neither her strategy or luck to the whims of chance, as she demonstrated by taking up a hand that ended a round without a single play.
The stress was almost enough to break JiJy.
But in the end, she took the final round, the game, and the dance with Oliver to win the night.
Some might say she played with the heart of a lion. Others might say she has firstborn-child syndrome.
We can all agree that among such friends our fortune is great indeed.
